In the Episcopal Church we joke that coffee is the eighth sacrament, but there is a cost to coffee: both human and environmental. All Saints, San Leandro, for the past ten years has been committed to using coffee that is organic, fair trade, shade-grown, bird-friendly, high altitude, and single-origin from indigenous and small producer co-ops in Chiapas, Mexico. Join us for this Zoom session with photos and a film on Café Mam Coffee’s 36-years of partnership with producer-owned cooperatives in Chiapas, Mexico, this online presentation takes us to the heart of ethical sourcing in coffee.
With a background in Latin American History, Politics and Spanish from the University of Oregon – and hands-on experience serving migrant families – Megan Bassett, Café Mam’s Community Liaison, loves sharing the story of Café Mam’s unique journey. In her presentations she explores coffee’s colonial beginnings, the rise of producer-owned cooperatives, sustainable agroforestry, and the inspiring role of SPP Global as a champion for small-scale and indigenous producers in the farmer-led fair trade movement. With fresh photos and stories from our 2025 trip to Chiapas, we look forward to introducing you to some of the wonderful people and the beautiful region that makes every cup of Café Mam possible.
