Family and friends are grieving at the death of Gwenyth Mary Page on March 27, 2024, at the age of 99, in Roseville, CA. Gwen was a speech and language therapist in the Castro Valley and Hayward Unified school districts for many years, retiring in 1991, and lived in Castro Valley until recently.She was born on October 30,1924 in Galveston Texas to parents Paul B. Caster Sr. and Marjorie Thurgood Caster. She was predeceased by them, her beloved husband, Robert A. Page, and her brother, Paul B. Caster Jr. She graduated from Berkeley High School in 1945 and the University of California, Berkeley, in 1948 on a special war years 3-year program. She taught in Germany for a year for the U.S. Army before returning home to marry in 1955. Awarded a graduate fellowship, Gwen earned a master’s degree at UCSF in 1962. A lifelong Episcopalian, Gwen was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church in San Leandro. She served on boards for the Episcopal Diocese of California, and in her church on the vestry, as a lay Eucharistic minister, choir member and valued volunteer. She also volunteered for the Cal Retired Teachers No. 59, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where she earned an award for 1,000 hours of service, and with her husband ushered at San Francisco Opera. The couple were active in Marriage Encounter, U.C. Berkeley Alumni Association, and traveled extensively in retirement.Gwen marched on a picket line when Hayward teachers went on strike, was a member of Delta Zeta, served as a Girl Scouts leader and was an enthusiastic Jazzercise member for many years. She loved her cats and collected cat figurines. She was beloved by many friends who cherished her deeply and will honor her memory. Gwen is survived by daughters Veronica Derby (Dave) and Meredith Fisher (Christopher) and granddaughters Carolyn Derby (Jonathan), Emma Stannard (Ryan), Rosemary Derby, bonus granddaughter Ayla Fisher, and great-grandchildren Kylee and Finnick Stannard. The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff at Baywood Court in Castro Valley and Sonrisa Memory Care in Roseville. A special thank you to all of her caregivers, especially Barbara Ortiz. In lieu of flowers, please honor Gwen’s memory with a donation to the All Saints Food Pantry, the Castro Valley Library, or Planned Parenthood. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday June 8th at 1:00 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 911 Dowling Blvd., San Leandro, CA 94578.
