A Celebration for Rev. Karen

Rev. Karen's son is graduating from college.  She will be on vacation from May 6 through May 13 in order to celebrate with the family. We offer her our sincere congratulations.  Well done MOM!  Enjoy that special time with your family.

If you have concerns during this time, please speak to the Rector's Warden Claire Burke. She is in charge. The Rev. Kathryn Ward will preach and celebrate on Sunday, May 10 at both services, and handle pastoral care emergencies.

Social Ministries

submitted by Tom Breckenridge

The Social Ministries Team met on April 26 to discuss the social ministries fund and decide on some disbursements from that fund. Thomas LaFrance presented a thorough explanation of how the account is funded as well as a history of income and expenses. Thank you Thomas!

Among the points that Thomas made:

Social Ministries is a designated fund. That is, it is not a part of the operations budget, but is funded solely through donations made specifically to Social Ministries - primarily through the first-Sunday-of-the-month Social Ministries donation envelopes.

Per diocesan guidelines, 100% of Social Ministries donations are used for social ministries. That is, these moneys are not subject to the same roughly 12% assessment to the operations budget that is paid to the diocese for its work, part of which is of course social ministry.

Parishioners have been very generous in their support of Social Ministries. On average, $500 per month is donated.

This generosity through the years has built the Social Ministries fund balance to just over $5,700. Last year, social ministries expenditures totaled $5,061.

As for disbursements, the team discussed a number of possibilities, deciding against some, deferring several for later this year, and taking immediate action on the following:

1. $250 for Sacred Space

2. $250 for grocery certificates for Reverend Karen to give to people who come to the church looking for assistance

 3. Giving all donations made to Social Ministries on the first Sunday in May to Corazon

As we discussed the merits of disbursements for various causes, we realized that we needed to clarify our own Social Ministries mission and the criteria for disbursement of funds. Our next meeting will be dedicated to achieving that clarity.

The Social Ministries Team thanks the parish for its generous and enthusiastic support of the parish's programs. Through the years we have grown from a parish making a single chili supper a month for 35 women and children to one maintaining a robust ministry that feeds and tends to the needs of thousands.

Blessings to you all.

Tom

Corozon Outreach

Now is the time to line up your passport for the Southern Alameda Deanery outreach trip to northern Mexico to build a home with and for a family there. The build day is Saturday, June 20th. No particular construction skills are needed for the work, only a big heart and a willingness to work and follow directions! All Saints volunteers have the option of travelling by car together to Chula Vista, CA on Friday, June 19th, returning on Sunday, June 21st. Pick-ups and drop offs can also be made at the San Diego airport.

All volunteers are heartily welcome; those under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult family member.   Energetic middle school, high school and young adults are especially welcome. Most volunteers will sleep at St. John's Episcopal Church in Chula Vista on Friday and Saturday nights. Adults who may want to stay in a hotel are asked to make their own reservations. Free food is provided for workers. For more information, or to indicate your interest, please speak to Bill or Irene O'Hair, or to Claire Burke.

Items Desired For Garage Sale

Saturday May 16

Be sure to save the date for the Yard Sale that All Saints is sponsoring in connection with the San Leandro Yard Sale on Saturday May 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Please bring your clothing, jewelry, small household items etc. to the church during the next few weeks so we can begin organizing and pricing items. Please note that we are not able to accept large items that require more than one person to carry or transport in a large pickup.

Help is needed on that Saturday, and the day before, to set up and get ready. Please sign up for one or more slots of time on the sign up list in the narthex or speak with Connie Camp, Mary Kincaid or Claire Burke.

Thank you ahead of time for all the help that it is going to take to make this a fun event and a successful fund raiser for All Saints.

Mother's Day

Treat Your Mom to Church on Mother's Day

Give thanks to God for the woman who gave you birth, and so much more, in church on Sunday, May 10. We will honor her, and other mothers, on that day.

Be Fiery for the Church's Birthday

We will celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples, and the birthday of the church, on Sunday, May 24. The Holy Spirit set the first disciples "on fire" for ministry and mission. By tradition, many Christians wear red on this day. Join others for a special celebration on this day.

Pictures for Parish Profile

The Search Committee needs photographs for the parish profile. Pictures of the Crab Feed, the coffee hour, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, the Christmas pageant, and/or last year's Corazon trip are especially desired, though all pictures would be appreciated. Please label your pictures with your name, so they can be returned to you. Photos should be submitted to Sallie Enderlin, Jack Strohm, or the church office.
