The topic of the Bible and its view on homosexuality has been widely debated for decades across the country– in churches and beyond. In this workshop, the Rev. Justin R. Cannon will shed some light on the handful of bible verse that are often mis-used to condemn lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons. Fr. Justin is the author of “The Bible, Christianity, & Homosexuality,” a book which The Los Angeles Times describes as “an illuminating…analysis that argues the Bible doesn’t condemn faithful gay relationships.” (McGough, 7/18/05). In this workshop Fr. Justin will help Christians reclaim a deeper understanding of those section of the bible that are distorted to condemn LGBT persons.
Fr. Justin is the rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, San Leandro (www.saintsalive.net). In 2005, he founded a ministry to LGBT Christians under the name “Truth Sets Free” and was shortly thereafter featured as a “Future Gay Hero” in the prominent gay news-magazine The Advocate. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and in 2006 Cannon was recognized as one of OUT Magazine’s Top 100 most influential gay people of the year. For his work on LGBT equality within the Church, in November 2007 he was honored as one of Instinct’s 2007 Leading Men of the Year. Fr. Justin has presented on the Bible and homosexuality at churches around the country and is pleased to present this workshop for the people of San Leandro and the wider Bay Area.
